Tree of Life, Haiti Steel Drum Wall Art 34.25" X 16.25"

Tree of Life, Haiti Steel Drum Wall Art 34.25" X 16.25"
$129.00

Haitian metal sculptures all come with a clear, weather-proof coating but if exposed to the elements, they will begin to rust over time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if it's not the look you're going for, fear not. Just pick up a can of spray on enamel clear coat and go to it. Once a year will do it. Piece of cake! In the village of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, the air rings with the sound of metal banging against metal. Workshops line the streets of the village and outside each are stacks of discarded 55-gallon drums awaiting transformation. To begin the process, the tops of the barrels are removed and the open barrel is stuffed with straw and dried banana leaves and then set ablaze. This burns out the residue and old paint and strengthens the metal. After the barrels have cooled, they are slit down the side, pried open, pounded flat and sanded down, giving the artist a smooth flat surface, much like a painter's canvas. The artist chalks his design onto the metal and then, using a hammer and chisel, begins the work of cutting the sculpture and giving it form, detail and dimension. When he is satisfied with his results, he pounds his signature onto the sculpture and seals it with a protective, weather-proof finish.

Girls Dancing, Haitian Metal Art, Recycled Steel, Handmade, Fair Trade 34" x 17"
$129.00

In Haiti, the traditional art of converting oil drums into sculptures is a true mark of both man's imagination and his resourcefulness in the face of dire economic circumstances. Using 55-gallon oil drum cast offs, the artist first removes both ends of the drum. Next, he stuffs the drum with straw, igniting it to burn out any residues. When it has cooled, he slices it down one side and pounds it into a flat metal sheet . With a stick of chalk, the artist then draws his intended design onto the metal. Finally, he applies a hammer and chisel to the task; cutting, shaping, and contouring the piece to its completion.

Tree of Life Metal Wall Art, Contemporary Iron Artwork Decor, Celtic Family Trees, Round Modern Plaque, Handmade in Haiti,Fair Trade Certified

The " Celtic Tree of Life" is a particularly poignant symbol in Haiti. Trees are a precious, though rapidly disappearing resource, where less than 1.5% of natural growth remains, due to deforestation. The culprits: poor land management practices and grinding poverty. Between land being cleared for subsistence farming - which constitutes two-thirds of Haitian labor activity - and wood being harvested to provide 70% of the nation's fuel, the tropical forests of Haiti are virtually gone. The upshot is topsoil erosion amounting to 36 million tons annually, accelerated land degradation, silting lakes and waterways, increased greenhouse gases, and deaths numbering in the thousands due to mudslides when heavy weather strikes.

Tree of life with Flowers, Nature Inspired Metal Wall Art, Hang indoor or outdoors 22.5" X 23"
$69.00

The center of Haitian metal sculpture is the village of Croix-des-Bouquets, where the clanging sound of hammers striking chisels is a constant music. To begin, the artist chalks his design onto the metal. Chisels, dies and a large hammer are used to cut and shape the piece, giving it form and texture. When the highly intricate and physically demanding work is complete and the artist is satisfied with his work, he signs his name boldly with a small chisel and applies a clear, weather-proof coating. The result is a wonderful, fair trade piece of handcrafted art.A few nails and a hammer are all you'll need to hang your sculpture. Look for a place where the design is joined or notched and put the first nail there. Use a second and possibly a third nail, if the piece is large, in other joined or notched design elements within the sculpture to straighten and secure it to the wall. The nails will "disappear" with the piece. Simple as that. Before this sculpture left the workshop in Haiti, a clear, weather-proof coating was applied to protect it from the elements. If it is displayed indoors, you'll never have to lift a finger, but if it is going to go outside, you might want to apply a spray-on clear coat yourself once a year to retain it's glossy patina.

All of the Haitian Metal Art can be used both indoors or out. The sculptures have a clear enamel coat when shipped to you~ To maintain this original look you will need to spray the sculpture with a clear enamel every year and a half~ We use our local hardware brand Ace Clear Enamel spray. When used outdoors weather will wear away the enamel coating over time~ Many people prefer the natural aging process which is a rust~ Or to maintain the original look give the sculpture a light spray front and back with the clear enamel~ These sculptures are made of a heavy gauge steel so will not rust away~ If your sculpture does rust or you have forgotten to spray it, do not worry, just lightly sand the rusted areas, then spray it with clear enamel front and back. Now you are good to go for another year!

Crossing Double Tree of Life, Haitian Steel Drum Art, Metal Wall Art, 23" X 23"
$69.00

Following four generations of tradition, each piece of Haitian metal art is made entirely by hand with simple tools. Starting with a cast-off steel drum, the metal is cleaned, sanded, and pounded flat. From there, the artist chalks his design onto the metal and then begins the heavy, tedious work of cutting out the pattern with a hammer and chisel and giving the piece detail and dimension. Finally, he applies a clear-coat to the piece, which protects it and makes it perfectly suited for indoor or outdoor display.
